WFB: Ogre Kingdoms Hunter List (Minus the Hunter)
Well, I’m back with another Hunter-based list for Ogre Kingdoms. No, I still haven’t gotten around to purchasing anything yet; I still have the Tomb Kings to test and play around with (I’ve gotten everything assembled and painted for 1000pts., although I’m considering dropping the chariots for some Ushabti).
Anyways! You may note the mystifying lack of Hunter in this 1000pt. list. I decided I couldn’t fit both him and the Firebelly, so dropped the Hunter (the Firebelly acts as general, so he’s mandatory). I played around with including a Butcher but ultimately didn’t; it fits the fluff fairly enough, but it doesn’t actually fit in the army, for reasons I shall explain after the list!
Level 2 Firebelly w/ Dispel Scroll & Ironcurse Icon
40 Gnoblars with Trappers
40 Gnoblars with Trappers
4 Leadbelchers
2 Mournfang Cavalry w/ heavy armour & ironfists
Thundertusk
Now, about that Butcher. I wanted to put the general/wizard in a unit, so that he wouldn’t get sniped by a war machine (excepting the Ironcurse Icon, of course, but this is just as much for aesthetic reasons). The Butcher didn’t really make sense in any unit except Bulls/Ironguts, neither of which I wanted to use. I wanted to keep the focus squarely on a Hunter and his Gnoblar and animal buddies. Yes, there are other Ogres in the list (namely the Leadbelchers and Mournfang riders) but those have a fluff reason for existing. The Mournfang riders are the Hunter’s buddies, who have tamed Mournfangs the better to hunt. The Leadbelchers hunt with their leadbelcher guns, which gets them less respect from the rest of this makeshift Hunter-tribe, but they still bring home big creatures. I still don’t fully like this (the fluff specifically mentions Chaos Dwarfs, so I immediately started thinking about a Chaos-aligned OK force…) but I suppose I could model them with large bows or, perhaps, just keep the guns. They are cool-looking, after all. Anyways, I felt the Firebelly fit better with them than the Butcher. The connection between fire and the blackpowder guns is nice, and of course the Lore of Fire contains a lot of long-range, magic missile spells, which fit better with the Leadbelchers than the Lore of the Great Maw spells. The Thundertusk’s inclusion should be obvious, a mountain creature herded down from the slopes by the Hunter as a beast of burden or weapon of war instead of being killed. The Gnoblars are also fairly obvious, I feel, as the primary members of the tribe, including some over-idealistic members that get carried away with trapping (which is just as useful to the Hunter, I suppose).
On the tabletop… Well, I highly doubt two Mournfang riders will do much, although they are tough, and hits directed against them aren’t directed at anybody else. The Gnoblars will act as charge redirectors, with the added bonus of the Trappers killing a few models before hand. Anybody who doesn’t want to deal with that will have to avoid charging and get shot up by the Leadbelchers and Firebelly instead. Of course, they probably will just charge the Gnoblars, who will quickly lose the combat and require the aid of the Leadbelchers or Mournfangs. The Thundertusk is just for support, causing the enemy to Always Strike Last and having a nice little snowball-throwing weapon. In general, though, the Gnoblars will probably break easily, the Mournfangs and Thundertusk will be shot to death, and the Firebelly and his Leadbelcher buddies will be surrounded. Ah well, such is life… and of course, this isn’t a competitive list, not what so ever. It is cheerfully fluffy, though.
I doubt I’ll work on this soon, though, seeing as how it would cost somewhere in the $340 range to build it (!).
